If you’ve ever been asked to collect a urine sample from your baby or toddler, you know it can feel like quite the task. But don’t worry – we’re here with some parent-tested tips and tricks to make it as stress-free as possible!

Tips for Collecting a Urine Sample from Babies

Getting a urine sample from a baby requires patience, timing, and sometimes a little teamwork. Here are our top tips to help you get that wee:

  1. Sprinkle Warm Water on Their Tummy
    • A few drops of warm water on your baby’s tummy can help stimulate the urge to go. Try this trick during feeding time when they’re relaxed for best results.
    • If possible, have a second set of hands available to help you catch the sample mid-flow while you hold or comfort your baby.
  2. Choose the Right Moment
    • Timing is key! Pay attention to your baby’s typical patterns and try to collect the sample when they usually go, such as after a nap or feeding.

Tips for Collecting a Urine Sample from Toddlers and Older Kids

For toddlers and older children, keeping things lighthearted and making it part of their routine can make the process easier:

  1. Hydration is Key
    • Make sure they’re well-hydrated before you start. Offer plenty of water or their favourite drink to encourage a timely trip to the toilet.
  2. Use the Sound of Running Water
    • Running water often helps trigger the urge to go, so keep the tap running in the bathroom as they sit on the potty or toilet.
  3. Bring Distractions
    • To keep them calm and relaxed, put them on the toilet or potty with a favourite show, book, or toy.
  4. The Bath Trick
    • A warm bath can also work wonders! Stand them up in a shallow bath of warm water and be ready with the sample jar.

Essential Tips for a Clean Sample

Collecting a clean sample can be tricky, but here are a few essential tips to help ensure accuracy:

  • Catch It Midstream
    • Always collect the sample midstream!
  • Use Only the Provided Sample Jar
    • To avoid contamination, ensure only the urine goes into the jar. Don’t let anything touch the inside of the container to keep it sterile.
  • Skip the Urine Bags
    • While it might seem more manageable, urine bags can lead to contamination and often result in an inaccurate sample. The sticking process can also irritate sensitive skin.
  • Clean the Area First
    • Always clean your child’s genital area before attempting to collect the sample to prevent any contamination.
