Stayin’ Alive or Baby Shark?

Stayin' Alive 🕺 or Baby Shark 🦈 ? How fast should you be doing CPR on babies and children?

You may have seen the viral video not long ago, of a group of people performing CPR on manikins, to the tune of the super contagious Baby Shark!

In our classes, we use the song ‘Stayin’ Alive’ to teach how to do CPR. When the video went viral, it lead to some people asking which is right, and why we use the tune that we do.

In a nutshell, the guidelines recommend CPR at a rate of 100-120 BPM. So, both songs are correct. We deliberately teach at a rate of 100 BPM for two main reasons;

  • It means there is more focus on good quality compressions over speed they are given at.
  • It takes into account that in a real emergency situation, adrenaline is likely to make you naturally do CPR compressions at a faster rate.
