What is 1800MEDICARE?

1800MEDICARE (1800 633 422) is a free 24/7 service where anyone in Australia can speak to a registered nurse about any health concern.

The nurse will ask about symptoms and guide you to the right care. That might mean looking after your child safely at home, seeing a GP, visiting an urgent care clinic, speaking with a pharmacist, or going to an emergency department.

The phone line is free and available to everyone in Australia. You don’t need a Medicare card to call.

When should families use it?

Parents and carers can call for themselves, their children, a family member, a friend, or someone they care for.

Registered nurse Emma says families do not need to work it out alone.

“If you’re ever unsure, 1800MEDICARE is available 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, for you to speak to
a registered nurse,” Emma says.
“We often get calls around different symptoms, including stomach pain, fever, or other injuries, such as
sprains, burns, or cuts.”

The website also includes a symptom checker, tools to find health services near you, medicines information and resources for consumers and health professionals.

The 1800MEDICARE app provides a secure way to access key health information, including electronic prescriptions and your Active Script List, if available.
