Red or brown strings in baby’s poo? The surprising (and common) cause

Picture warning for this blog - but we promise, it's great learning! 💩

In episode 6 of Mother Doctor Nurse – ‘Poo’ we talked about all things poo. As we all know, googling your little one’s bowel movements is somewhat of a rite of passage when it comes to parenthood – so there were plenty of great questions for us to answer!

A question we occasionally hear in our classes is; ‘what is in my baby’s poo?’ In particular – ‘what are these stringy bits I keep seeing?’

We had a similar question that was discussed in the podcast, and Sarah spoke about a common cause for (in particular) brown or red stringy bits in poo and it may surprise you…

Banana!

Sarah mentions that during her time as a nurse, she received a lot of questions about this, to the point of having some parents come into hospital because they were concerned about the ‘wormy things’ in their little one’s poo!

“What I want you to think about is have you fed your child a banana recently? Because bananas will actually cause little red stringy bits or brown stringy bits in your baby’s poo. So be aware of that. This is a public service announcement. Spread it across to all of your parent friends because especially before you start solids, it can be a really big surprise when you introduce banana for the first time what their poo is going to look like. So let’s spread the word – red and brown stringy bits!”

Remember though, if bub is unwell or they have blood or mucous in their poo, or if you are concerned for any reason, please seek medical advice.
